Trading on the day before and after the Independence Day holiday is often lackluster. Volume tends to decline on either side of the holiday as vacations begin early and finish late. From 1980 through 2010, DJIA, S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Russell 2000 had recorded average losses on the day before and the day after. Solid gains in 2011, 2012 and 2013 have lifted the day before to slightly positive. More recently, since 2005, DJIA and S&P 500 have advanced in seven of the past nine trading days before Independence Day while the day after has been essentially mixed.
